A New York guy killed Texas Music. He showed up in Austin in the early s at about the same time Willie, Waylon, and the boys were establishing a genre referred to alternately as Outlaw, Cosmic Cowboy, Progressive Country, or just plain Texas Music. Walker was unique, a carefree roustabout who sang silly party songs about Sangria and getting by on getting by. Willie and Waylon were for crying in your beer. Walker was for laughing while chugging the whole six-pack. His crowd wanted dumbed-down hell-raising anthems. Members Only Area. Among the glories of Texas is its music, which is as diverse and vital as the state and its people. Woven into the musical fabric are country, blues, jazz, spirituals, gospel, rock 'n' roll, Tex-Mex, Cajun and the music of Czechs, Germans and other European immigrants. These forms have not only coexisted, they have evolved and cross-pollinated as Texas has changed, becoming steadily more urban. Texas is the birthplace of Western swing, which incorporates elements of country, blues, pop, big-band jazz and Latin rhythms, and of conjunto, which combines traditional Mexican music with polkas and other European forms. Texas has nurtured zydeco, the music of French-speaking blacks, which has increasingly incorporated elements of rhythm and blues. In Texas, you can catch a performance by Steve Jordan, who has been called the Jimi Hendrix of the button accordion. Or you can walk into a honky-tonk where a country singer in a cowboy hat is borrowing a verse from Mississippi Delta bluesman Robert Johnson about a woman who "may be in Ethiopia somewhere.

Culture Trip stands with Black Lives Matter. Jackie Venson is carrying on the torch of the Austin blues scene like her predecessors, including Gary Clark Jr. However, she undoubtedly brings her own style and passion to the table as an equally talented guitarist and captivating vocalist. Calliope Musicals is the carefree beam of positivity and love we need in these dark times. The six-piece psychedelic folk band is one of those groups you must see live to fully appreciate and understand. Whether they bring confetti, face paint, happy face signs, or dancing robots along with them, their shows always contain a continuous flow of upbeat, reciprocal energy going from the band to the audience and back to the band. They often tour around the state and are beginning to hit major festivals around the country, including Electric Forest.
